Saudi ‘Sleeping Prince’ Alwaleed bin Khaled dies after 20 years in coma

RIYADH — Saudi Prince Khaled bin Talal has shared the sorrowful news of his son’s passing, Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal, who spent nearly 20 years in a coma after a serious car accident in London in 2005, according to the Saudi Gazette.

Prince Khaled announced that funeral prayers for his son will take place on Sunday at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, following the Asr prayer.

Affectionately known as “The Sleeping Prince,” Prince Alwaleed slipped into a deep coma following the accident while studying in the UK.

For almost two decades, he remained under continuous medical care, never regaining consciousness, though occasional slight movements kindled moments of fleeting hope for his family.

Throughout these years, Prince Khaled refused to withdraw life support, steadfast in his belief that only God determines matters of life and death.

Prince Alwaleed’s plight drew widespread compassion, with millions in the Kingdom and beyond following his journey over the years.

His long and valiant struggle finally ended with the announcement of his passing on Saturday, closing a chapter that touched countless hearts.
