Saudi Arabia launches 2nd Global Arabic Calligraphy Residency in Jeddah

The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy has unveiled the second edition of its highly anticipated "Dar Al Qalam Residency for Arabic Calligraphy," inviting artists from around the world to take part in an immersive cultural exchange later this year in Historic Jeddah.

Set to run for eight weeks during the fourth quarter of this year, the residency will welcome 10 professional calligraphers and visual artists—both Saudi and international participants.

The program aims to foster a vibrant artistic community, offering a creative space where artists can reflect, collaborate, and envision the future of Arabic calligraphy, a centuries-old art form celebrated throughout the Arab world.

As part of the residency, artists will embark on individual and collaborative projects, with guidance from a panel of experts who select participants based on their artistic achievements, engagement with the art form, and the originality of their proposals. The experience will culminate in an open studio event, allowing the public a glimpse into their creative journeys.

This year’s program focuses on four themes: the traditional foundations of Arabic calligraphy, its complementary art forms, contemporary approaches, and innovative visions for its future. Participants will also enjoy workshops, one-on-one mentorship, cultural tours around Jeddah and beyond, and field visits to local artists and experts—ensuring a dynamic exchange of knowledge and inspiration.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, proficient in either Arabic or English, and committed to practicing Arabic calligraphy or a related visual art. Full participation in all residency activities is required.

Launched in 2024, the Dar Al Qalam Residency reflects the ambitious goals of Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to strengthen the country’s cultural identity and support the arts on an international scale.

For artists and calligraphy enthusiasts worldwide, this residency offers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the living history and bright future of Arabic calligraphy—a testament to the power of art in building bridges between cultures.
