Egyptian minister eyes UK rail tech deal in London
Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh, met with executives of British company Park Signalling during his official visit to London to explore opportunities for localising railway signalling technology and establishing manufacturing operations in Egypt for export.
The discussions focused on a project to introduce advanced digital solutions for managing and operating Egypt’s railway network, aimed at enhancing safety, operational efficiency, and reducing maintenance costs compared to traditional systems.
Officials from Park Signalling, a specialist in railway signalling, control, and safety systems, outlined plans to expand in Egypt. The company is considering the establishment of a local assembly and manufacturing centre to meet domestic demand and support exports to African and regional markets, leveraging Egypt’s strategic geographic location and industrial infrastructure.
The firm also indicated that success in the initial phase could pave the way for additional investments by its parent group, Unipart, in related logistics, supply chain, and transport sectors.
Saleh emphasised the Egyptian government’s commitment to attracting investments that involve technology transfer, local manufacturing, and human capacity building.
“We support projects with high added value in coordination with relevant authorities,” the minister said, adding that the ministry is ready to provide full support, facilitate procedures, and address any challenges to accelerate implementation.
He highlighted Egypt’s developed infrastructure and strategic position, which qualify it to become a regional hub for manufacturing and exporting to African and Middle Eastern markets.
Mark Winterton, Managing Director of Park Signalling, expressed appreciation for the Egyptian side’s support and described Egypt as a strategic platform for regional expansion, with a focus on knowledge transfer, capacity building, and local manufacturing.
Both sides agreed to continue coordination on technical and procedural aspects, including accelerating the pilot phase in preparation for broader industrial and technological investments.
The meeting reflects Egypt’s efforts to modernise its railway sector through international partnerships while deepening localisation and boosting exports.
