Egypt celebrates 80th anniversary of UN charter, reaffirms commitment to multilateralism

he Ministry of Foreign Affairs today commemorates the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Charter coming into force in 1945. On this significant occasion, Egypt reaffirms its full support for the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and multilateral efforts. The Ministry emphasizes the importance of upholding the UN Charter and its noble principles, which aim to promote international peace, security, and sustainable development.

Egypt underscores its firm belief in the critical role of multilateralism as a cornerstone for building stable international relations based on respect for international law and a rules-based global order. This approach fosters peace, collective security, coexistence, and tolerance among nations. Egypt remains committed to advancing regional and international peace and security, adhering to a foreign policy rooted in the UN principles of respect for international law, peaceful conflict resolution, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and strengthening multilateral cooperation to address shared challenges.

As a founding member of the United Nations, Egypt has played a pivotal role in supporting the organization and its principles. It has become a key contributor and active partner in multilateral international efforts. Egypt serves as a major regional hub for the UN, hosting 38 UN offices with over 2,300 staff members.

Egypt is also a leading contributor to UN peacekeeping operations, ranking seventh globally in the number of military experts and thirteenth in the number of regular personnel deployed in UN missions. Currently, 1,199 Egyptian personnel are serving, including 102 women, representing approximately 10% of Egypt’s total peacekeeping contingent, demonstrating the country’s commitment to supporting peacekeeping efforts.

Egypt has served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council six times, playing a central role in addressing issues related to international peace and security, particularly those concerning Africa and the Arab region. During its most recent term (2016–2017), Egypt focused on supporting political resolutions to conflicts, combating terrorism and extremism, and addressing humanitarian crises in various parts of the world.

Driven by its belief in the UN’s pivotal role in promoting international peace, security, and development, and in response to evolving global dynamics, Egypt advocates for comprehensive UN reforms. These reforms aim to address the historical injustices faced by Africa and developing nations, including through the reform and expansion of the Security Council.

Egypt fully supports the unified African position outlined in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. The country calls for international cooperation to strengthen the UN and reform its mechanisms to better meet the aspirations of peoples worldwide for peace, security, stability, and development.
