Egypt's Rokon Farouk Museum safe following false fire reports

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has reassured the public that there is no truth to recent rumors about a fire at the Rokon Farouk Museum in Helwan, Cairo.

In a statement released today, the ministry confirmed that the museum is completely safe and has not experienced any fire or suffered any damage whatsoever. The clarification comes after posts on social media claimed that a blaze had broken out at the historical site.

Officials explained that a fire did, in fact, occur, but it was at a plant nursery located about two kilometers away from the museum. The incident had no connection to the Rokon Farouk Museum and posed no threat to this beloved heritage site.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has kindly called on members of the media and the public to verify information through official channels before sharing news that could cause confusion or disseminate incorrect details.

King Farouk had a deep appreciation for nature. During a stroll through the Helwan district—renowned for its fresh air and breathtaking views of lush gardens and the Nile—he came across the Grand Hotel’s tea stall. Captivated by its charm, he purchased it to transform it into his personal retreat.

The construction of King Farouk’s rest house was overseen by Mustafa Pasha Fahmi, the Minister of Royal Works, between 1941 and 1942. Designed to resemble a boat nestled on the riverbank, the retreat offered a unique architectural allure.

Surrounding the rest house is a garden filled with rare flowers, featuring a centerpiece known as the Fountain of Love.

With its doors open and exhibits unharmed, the Rokon Farouk Museum continues to welcome visitors from around the world, celebrating Egypt’s rich history and culture.
