Abu Mena rises again: How Egypt saved a sacred jewel from danger
A quiet miracle has unfolded in Egypt’s Western Delta: the ancient site of Abu Mena, once feared lost, has been officially declared safe by UNESCO after years on the World Heritage in Danger list.
Perched near Alexandria, Abu Mena’s early Christian pilgrimage site had faced a daunting threat—rising groundwater that threatened its crumbling churches, basilicas, and the revered tomb of Saint Menas. Today, thanks to Egypt’s determined rescue mission, the world is celebrating the restoration of a unique chapter in human history.
The decision to remove Abu Mena from the endangered list was announced at UNESCO headquarters in Paris during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee—met with applause and heartfelt congratulations for Egypt’s commitment to preserving its heritage treasures.
“This is more than a rescue—it is a renewal,” declared Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, who credits a broad alliance of government agencies and the Coptic Church for the site’s revival.
“By lowering groundwater, restoring ancient stones, and welcoming the faithful and curious alike, we have secured Abu Mena’s legacy for future generations.”
Once one of the world’s most important Christian pilgrimage sites after Jerusalem, Abu Mena was placed on UNESCO’s danger list in 2001 after nearby agricultural work sent groundwater levels alarmingly high, causing foundations to weaken and walls to sag.
In response, Egypt embarked on a multi-year project—marrying engineering expertise with careful restoration. By 2022, a new water management system was running, and centuries-old structures stood strong once again. International experts like the World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS praised the “remarkable progress” on the ground, setting an example for cultural rescue worldwide.
“This success is a testament to what can happen when heritage and hope come together,” said Dr. Gamal Mostafa, head of Islamic, Coptic, and Jewish Antiquities. Pilgrims and history lovers can once again walk the ancient courtyards, visit the sacred well and imagine a time when Abu Mena buzzed with spiritual life.
From crisis to celebration, Abu Mena’s story is a reminder: when nations and communities unite to safeguard their past, they create a brighter future for us all.
