Egypt and Spain deepen tourism and heritage ties

Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Sherif Fathi, welcomed Spanish Ambassador Álvaro Iranzo Gutiérrez at the ministry’s headquarters in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital for high-level talks aimed at boosting cooperation in tourism and archaeological heritage.

During the meeting, both sides explored ways to increase Spanish tourism to Egypt, highlighting the recent surge in Spanish visitors—a 63.3% rise from January to August 2025 compared to the same period last year, with overnight stays up by more than 57%. Minister Fathi praised the Spanish market as a key source of visitors, emphasizing Egyptian tourism’s unique blend of ancient history and diverse experiences, from cultural adventures to beach and eco-tourism.

The discussions also focused on deepening archaeological cooperation. Currently, 12 Spanish archaeological missions are actively working across Egypt, further strengthening scientific and cultural ties between the two countries.

Both sides exchanged ideas to intensify promotional campaigns in Spain, aiming to showcase Egypt’s diverse tourism products and encourage greater Spanish investment in Egypt’s tourism sector.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the strong historical relationship between Egypt and Spain and a shared commitment to further expand ties for the benefit of both nations.

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Magdalena Cruz, Cultural and Scientific Affairs Advisor at the Spanish Embassy, Ms. Rana Gouhar, Advisor to the Minister for Communications and International Relations, and Dr. Moamen Osman, Head of Projects at Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities.
