Egypt prioritizes investment and innovation in energy sector

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a meeting in Alamein City with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat to review the latest progress in the country’s energy sector.

According to the official spokesperson for the presidency, discussions focused on Egypt’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy mix and enhance the use of renewable energy, including the integration of energy storage batteries and boosting energy efficiency. The meeting also highlighted strategies to optimize fuel use in power plants, expand Egypt’s national power grid through interconnection projects, and reduce electricity losses.

The Minister reported that the ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Petroleum to ensure adequate supplies of gas and fuel for electricity generation. Efforts to curb electricity theft, lower technical losses, and introduce about 2,000 megawatts of new renewable energy at an investment of $2.3 billion were also discussed.

The officials reviewed Egypt’s progress in localizing the production of wind turbines and storage batteries, in cooperation with major international companies. Installed renewable energy capacity in Egypt now exceeds 8,000 megawatts, including wind, solar, and hydropower sources. The meeting also addressed plans for further capacity increases by 2030 as part of Egypt’s integrated and sustainable energy strategy.

Other topics included upgrading power generation efficiency, updates on Egypt’s El-Dabaa nuclear power plant, the 3,000-megawatt Egypt-Saudi electricity interconnection project ($1.8 billion investment), and electricity interconnection with Greece.

President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of attracting more investment to the renewable energy sector, upgrading national electricity infrastructure, and localizing industries related to renewable energy technology. He also called for continued expansion and development to ensure reliable electricity for all residential, industrial, and service sectors across the country.
