Egypt launches new renewable energy training centers with German, EU support

In a significant move to boost Egypt’s transition towards sustainable energy, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with El Sewedy Electric Foundation to manage and operate new Centers of Excellence (CoC) in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

This milestone is made possible with generous funding from the German Development Bank (KfW) and the European Union, underlining the strong international collaboration for Egypt’s future.

The agreement marks a key step in Egypt’s ongoing efforts to enhance technical education and align it closely with the current and future requirements of its growing job market.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Ayman Bahaa El-Din, Deputy Minister of Education, on behalf of the Minister; and Ms. Hanan El-Rehany, Board Member of El Sewedy Electric Foundation and CEO of El Sewedy Technical Academy, in the presence of high-ranking representatives from the German Development Bank (KfW), the European Union, and the German Embassy in Cairo.

Transforming education for a greener future

This partnership is a central part of the "Technical Education for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency" (TEREEE) project—a joint initiative of the Egyptian and German governments, supported by the EU. Its ambition is to equip youth with the technical skills needed to thrive in the evolving field of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The heart of the project is the creation of three new Centers of Excellence, along with the modernization of 18 existing technical secondary schools. These advanced centers and schools will deliver high-quality, competency-based curricula, practical training in state-of-the-art workshops and labs, and comprehensive upskilling for teachers and trainers. The aim is clear: preparing a generation of skilled professionals ready to meet the demands of a fast-changing energy sector and the broader national economy.

Shared international commitment

In remarks delivered at the signing, Dr. Ayman Bahaa El-Din emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to making technical education a driver for economic and environmental progress. “This initiative reflects our priority to empower the next generation of skilled workers who can support Egypt’s green transition and modernize our industry,” he stated.

Representatives of the German Development Bank and the European Union also celebrated the partnership. “The cooperation between Germany and Egypt in technical education and renewable energy stands as a model for sustainable development and strategic partnership,” noted Ms. Christiane Kurz, Head of KfW’s Project Portfolio.

Ms. Alice Peslin, Head of Human Development and Inclusive Growth at the EU Delegation to Egypt, highlighted the EU’s long-standing commitment to supporting Egypt’s energy and education sectors. “Our partnership has already helped graduate over 3,500 students from competency-based learning centers, with job placement rates exceeding 80%. We are proud to contribute to Egypt’s future-ready workforce,” she affirmed.

Empowering Egypt’s youth for sustainable growth

Ms. Hanan El-Rehany of El Sewedy Electric Foundation reflected on the importance of linking technical education with real-world industry needs, noting that the Foundation has been pioneering in this field since 2011. “This partnership will help us ensure that young Egyptians have the skills, training, and opportunities to succeed and drive innovation in one of the world's most vital industries,” she said.

German Embassy Development Cooperation Head, Mr. Holger Illi, praised the integration of private sector partners in implementing high-quality technical education, drawing parallels to Germany’s own renowned dual education model.

A new model for regional technical excellence

By establishing Centers of Excellence and upgrading technical programs, this project positions Egypt as a leader in workforce development and green technology, setting a strong example for other nations in the region.

The signing ceremony was attended by key government officials, representatives of El Sewedy Electric Foundation, German Development Bank, and the European Union.

About the project:

The Technical Education for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency project focuses on two core areas:

1. Establishing three Centers of Excellence in renewable energy and energy efficiency, acting as hubs for collaboration between technical education and the private sector.

2. Upgrading and maintaining 18 existing technical secondary schools, introducing advanced training programs aligned with global standards.

The project ultimately aspires to ensure Egypt’s technical workforce is ready not just to meet local demand, but also to compete internationally—building a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
