Egypt accelerates modernization of Nile river transport for passengers and cargo
Egypt has announced an ambitious plan to overhaul river transport along the Nile—Africa’s longest river, stretching over 3,100 kilometers within Egypt.
The Ministry of Transport has launched a series of reforms and initiatives to transform Nile river transport, aiming to boost both the movement of passengers and the shipping of goods. Among the key steps:
Streamlined Governance: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has approved a new law consolidating all regulatory authority for Nile river transport under the General Authority for River Transport, designed to simplify and encourage investment and innovation in the sector.
Expanding River Ports: A nationwide network of river ports is being established and upgraded to handle various types of cargo, including containerized goods, with specialized ports available for different industries. These ports will support efficient, eco-friendly shipments across the country.
Upgrading Locks and Navigation: The Ministry is continually modernizing and maintaining river locks, now operating 24/7, to increase navigation capacity and reduce wait times for vessels.
Ensuring Safe Navigable Channels: Regular dredging and maintenance are being carried out to ensure safe passage for both commercial and tourist boats, promoting safety and smoother trade operations on the Nile.
Innovative Information Systems: In cooperation with Austrian experts, Egypt is implementing River Information Services—state-of-the-art electronic mapping and monitoring systems—to provide operators with real-time navigation data, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
Encouraging Private Investment: The government is inviting private companies, both local and international, to invest in river transport. The benefits are significant: river barges can replace dozens of trucks per trip, reducing road maintenance costs, minimizing environmental pollution, and decreasing traffic accidents.
Opportunities for Business: The private sector can participate in building and operating advanced river transport units—including eco-friendly barges for petroleum products, containers, and vehicles—as well as constructing and managing river ports and docks.
Through these efforts, river transport is becoming an integral part of Egypt’s multimodal logistics network, complementing road transport and offering seamless, door-to-door delivery of goods nationwide.
