Suez Canal Authority explores port development and training cooperation with Ivory Coast

Ismailia, Egypt – The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and the Republic of Ivory Coast are charting new courses for African maritime cooperation, seeking stronger ties in port development and specialist maritime training.

In a meeting held Monday at the SCA Guidance Building in Ismailia, Suez Canal Authority Chairman Vice Admiral Osama Rabie welcomed Ivory Coast’s Ambassador to Cairo, Dole Gueu Albert. Joined by SCA Vice Chairman Admiral Ashraf Atwa, discussions focused on unlocking shared opportunities in port management and workforce training, a testament to the growing friendship and partnership between Egypt and West Africa.

Vice Admiral Rabie emphasized Egypt's dedication to supporting developmental projects across Africa, particularly those connected to seaport modernization and professional training. “We are strongly committed to enhancing our role in supporting development projects throughout Africa—especially in port modernization and capacity-building,” Rabie stated warmly.

Highlighting successes, Admiral Rabie noted that the SCA had recently overseen the revitalization and reopening of Libya’s Port of Sirte, dormant for 14 years. He confirmed SCA’s readiness to work closely with Ivory Coast on an ambitious project: the development of Abidjan Port, the largest commercial port in West Africa. “Our expertise can help boost trade and export movement for both our countries and strengthen economic links across the continent,” he added.

Recognizing the vital role of training, Vice Admiral Rabie offered advanced training programs, provided by the SCA’s Maritime Training Academy, the largest of its kind in the Middle East, for Ivorian maritime professionals.

The Ambassador warmly welcomed the prospect of deeper partnership. “We are eager to learn from the SCA’s accumulated experience and proven excellence in maritime affairs,” he said.

The ambassador also highlighted Ivory Coast’s 760 km seaboard and the nation’s drive to expand its port infrastructure—especially for key agricultural exports like cocoa, cashews, and pineapples. He expressed full confidence in Egypt’s expertise, underlining the trust and mutual respect that characterize ties between the two countries.

As the meeting concluded, both parties agreed to form a joint working group to study Abidjan Port's proposed development, with findings to be presented to Ivory Coast’s Ministry of Transport. This collaborative spirit reflects the shared ambition to foster innovation, efficiency, and prosperity for African maritime industries.

The ambassador’s visit also included a cruise along the new Suez Canal, a stop at the SCA Yacht Marina in Ismailia, and a tour of the Suez Canal Museum—highlighting the rich history and continued importance of this vital waterway.
