Tutankhamun’s treasures move to the Grand Egyptian Museum
A new chapter in Egypt’s rich history is about to unfold. As preparations for the long-awaited grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) enter their final stages, an exciting development is underway: the world-famous collection of King Tutankhamun, the legendary boy king, will be transferred for the first time ever to a dedicated gallery at the GEM.
Beginning October 20, the Tutankhamun Gallery at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square will close its doors. This moment marks the final step in relocating the remaining priceless treasures of King Tutankhamun to their new home at the GEM—set dramatically at the foot of the Giza Pyramids. For the first time, over 5,000 artifacts discovered in the young pharaoh’s tomb will be displayed together in one spacious, purpose-built gallery.
Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, reassured visitors that the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir will continue to welcome guests as usual during its regular hours, with only the Tutankhamun Gallery closed for the transfer.
For visitors from all around the world, the Grand Egyptian Museum’s brand-new Tutankhamun gallery promises a sweeping, immersive experience. This unprecedented exhibition will allow international audiences to journey through the wonder and wealth of one of Ancient Egypt’s most storied rulers, all in one breathtaking setting.
“This is a truly exceptional moment in the history of archaeology and museums worldwide,” said Dr. Khaled. “To see King Tut’s entire collection reunited, telling his story together for the first time, will be a dream come true for historians, archaeologists, and visitors from Egypt and beyond.”
To prepare for this grand debut, the Grand Egyptian Museum will be closed to visitors starting October 15 for final organizational preparations. The museum’s official opening will take place on November 1, with the doors opening for visitors from November 4—timed beautifully to coincide with the 103rd anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Whether you are drawn by the timeless allure of Ancient Egypt or the thrill of new discoveries, this is an unmissable occasion. The Grand Egyptian Museum invites the world to witness history brought to life: for the first time, the complete treasures of King Tutankhamun will shine together at the gateway to the pyramids.
