UN chief urges restraint as Israel-Iran tensions escalate
United Nations – UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned the Security Council that the confrontation between Israel and Iran is escalating rapidly, resulting in severe civilian casualties, widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure, and attacks on nuclear facilities.
Speaking at a Security Council session focused on the Israel-Iran conflict on Friday, Guterres stressed the “enormous cost” to human life and called this a turning point for the international community, stating, “The direction we choose now will determine the fate of nations, and even the future of humanity.” He urged all parties, including potential participants and the Security Council itself, to “give peace a chance.”
Guterres continued that the world is watching these developments with increasing concern, warning that the current crisis is not isolated but part of a larger trend toward chaos. He said that expanding this conflict could ignite a fire no one could control, emphasizing, “We must not allow this to happen.”
Highlighting the longstanding tensions between Israel and Iran, Guterres pointed out that nuclear issues remain central to these disputes. He affirmed the importance of nuclear non-proliferation for global security, calling on Iran to uphold international agreements. He noted Iran’s repeated statements that it does not seek nuclear weapons, but acknowledged ongoing distrust.
The Secretary-General concluded by insisting that diplomatic efforts and international inspections are the only credible ways forward to resolve the crisis peacefully.
