Egypt to host Gaza reconstruction conference following ceasefire

Egypt is set to host an international conference focused on the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza once a ceasefire is reached, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced during a phone conversation with his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, on Wednesday.

According to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the upcoming conference will be organized in collaboration with the United Nations and the Palestinian government, signaling a coordinated effort to address the immense humanitarian needs and lay the foundation for long-term reconstruction in the war-torn Gaza Strip.

During the call, Foreign Minister Abdelatty updated Barrot on the latest negotiations aiming for a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries and secure the release of captives and detainees. He underscored the critical importance of ending the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas to avert deeper humanitarian catastrophe in the territory.

Abdelatty also called on the international community to take more decisive action to de-escalate the crisis and alleviate the suffering of civilians caught in the conflict. Both ministers affirmed the urgent need for a sustainable ceasefire as a prerequisite for initiating reconstruction and recovery in Gaza.

In addition to discussing the Gaza situation, the two foreign ministers reviewed preparations for another high-level international conference on resolving the broader Palestinian issue, which is set to be jointly led by France and Saudi Arabia. On this front, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast support for a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

The conversation also touched on wider regional stability, with both diplomats emphasizing the importance of maintaining the fragile ceasefire recently achieved between Israel and Iran. Abdelatty highlighted the crucial diplomatic role played by the E3 group—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—in supporting negotiations aimed at reducing tensions and making progress on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Egypt’s efforts to convene international partners for Gaza’s reconstruction underline the country’s ongoing commitment to regional peace, stability, and humanitarian relief, as well as its active diplomatic engagement in seeking durable solutions to Middle East conflicts.
