Grand Egyptian Museum prepares for historic unveiling with temporary closure
A wave of anticipation is sweeping across Egypt and the world as the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) enters its final preparations for a landmark moment. Ahead of its much-awaited official opening on November 1, the museum will close its doors temporarily from October 15 to November 4 to make way for the last crucial organizational and logistical touches.
These essential arrangements, according to Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the GEM’s Authority, are critical to ensuring the inauguration unfolds seamlessly and spectacularly. “We want every guest to experience the magic of Egypt’s heritage at its very best,” Ghoneim shared warmly.
When the GEM reopens its doors on November 4, 2025, it will do so on a date charged with historical resonance: the 103rd anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. Museum-goers will be welcomed into a fully immersive world-class cultural experience—an opportunity to journey through centuries of wonder, crowned by treasures from the Boy King himself.
The Grand Egyptian Museum, nestled in the shadow of the awe-inspiring Giza Pyramids, has already been building excitement these past months. Since mid-October 2024, visitors have enjoyed a “soft opening,” with selected galleries giving a tantalizing preview of what’s to come. February 2025 saw the introduction of official visiting hours, allowing guests daily access from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with extended hours every Wednesday and Saturday until 9:00 pm—perfect for families, travelers, and those seeking a magical after-hours stroll.
Set to be a global beacon for archaeological curiosity, the GEM will house over 100,000 artifacts, offering an unparalleled showcase of Egypt’s rich and fascinating legacy. Among its crown jewels are the dazzling collections from Tutankhamun’s tomb, sure to inspire awe in all who visit.
As the final countdown begins and the finishing touches are lovingly put in place, excitement is building—this grand opening promises to be a cultural milestone for Egypt and admirers of history everywhere. Visitors are encouraged to mark their calendars and prepare for an unforgettable journey into Egypt’s extraordinary past at the new GEM.
